It’s beginning to look a lot like… dry skin and acne… With winter comes all things cozy and wonderful; sweaters, warm drinks by the fireside, and presents. But one thing the movies don’t show is how the cold weather can affect your skin.

Environmental factors play a huge role in the appearance of your skin. In the summer season, your skin is typically more oily and hydrated. In winter time, the skin gets dry and dehydrated. Because of this, your skin routine should change from season to season. Perhaps the reason why your skin breaks out is because you don’t have a routine fit for the season you’re in. Here are some tips and tricks to prevent your skin from drying out and cracking in the cool winter air.

Moisturize!

Even those with combination-oily skin should find a thick moisturizer during this time of the year. It will stop your skin from flaking up and cracking when the dry, cool air hits it. It will also fight against wrinkles and age spots inevitable coming your way in the future.

Exfoliate less

In the summer, exfoliation with a scrub is helpful in scrubbing off all of the sweat, oil, and debris from a hot summer day. That doesn’t usually occur in the wintertime. Exfoliating too much amidst the colder weather can lead to damage to your skin and it drying out further. The amount of times you exfoliate will rely on your skin type. Those with dryer complexions should only exfoliate once a month. Combination-oily skin types may want to exfoliate more, maybe once every couple of weeks.

Hydrate

Moisturizing your skin isn’t the only thing that will prevent it from cracking. Your body survives on water. Drinking the required amount (generally half of your body weight in ounces) has many benefits for your body, one of them being fresher-looking skin.

Wash your mask!

In this new day and age, it’s important to wear a mask to protect yourself and others. Unfortunately, wearing them all day, every day, does not do great things for your skin. Welcome to the world of acne from your mask – also known as mask-ne. Washing your mask after each wear will not only clean the germs and bacteria from the outside and prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, but also clean the inside from the dirt and oil accumulated from your skin. Needless to say, washing your mask is important, so make sure you have enough on hand to wear for every day of the week… and then some!

Following these simple tips and tricks will leave your skin glowing on a cold, gloomy winter day. It’s worth the extra self-care in the evenings. So don’t skip your routine no matter how tired you are!
