The first thing you should do when buying a new skincare product or applying a product to your skin is check the ingredients. Your skin is the largest and one of the most vital organs of the body. It absorbs up to 60% of what you put on your skin. Ever wonder what you’re allowing into your body?

Sure, certain ingredients are great for the skin! But there are products that contain harmful ingredients that you should avoid entirely. When you use these products with harmful ingredients, those ingredients are being absorbed into your body and could have dangerous effects to your health. Here’s some products to avoid and a few ingredients to look out for…

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES

For the same reason the words, “contains artificial flavoring” on your food should be concerning, anything that is synthetic or artificial in our skincare products should always raise a red flag. These are made up of hundreds to thousands of different ingredients not listed on the label, so you are never sure what you are actually being exposed to. You don’t want to put something in your body that can also be found in many household products such as candles, air fresheners, and scented trash bags.

MINERAL OIL

Usually found in creams, lotions, ointments, and cosmetics, mineral oil is a moisturizing agent sourced from petroleum. Although it may moisturize the skin, it coats the skin like plastic, clogging its pores. You might think you’re helping your skin when in fact, you’re harming it. This ingredient interferes with skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, therefore increasing likelihood of acne and other disorders.

ALUMINUM

Most common in personal care products and especially antiperspirant deodorants, aluminum compounds are used to stop sweat ducts from releasing sweat to the surface of the skin. A study found that the constant application of antiperspirants containing aluminum could be related to an increase in breast cancer cells. More recently, there has been a push to use natural products and this is why.

PARABENS (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl)

Parabens are not always labeled but used as preservatives in many products. Since cosmetics contain ingredients that can biodegrade, these chemicals are added to prevent and reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and mold, increasing the shelf life of the product. This sounds all good and well, right? Well, there is some concern that parabens can cause a hormone imbalance, harm fertility and reproductive organs, cause skin irritation and increase the risk of cancer – all things you don’t want to happen.

SILOXANES

Look on the packaging for ingredients ending in “-siloxane” or “-methicone.” This is used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten. Even though those are all things we need in our skin, it has been said that siloxanes negatively affect the endocrine system and reproductive system.

What you put on your skin matters. Don’t just purchase a product because you saw your favorite beauty guru using it on her social media. Do your research first. What they apply on their skin may not even be effective for your specific skin type.

Sanseti clearly lists out every ingredient in every product so that there’s no confusion as to what you’re putting on your skin. For more information, check out our website.
