First of all, it’s important to mention that we are all different. Just like we have different personalities and fingerprints, we also have different skin. Granted, skin isn’t quite as unique as fingerprints, however, it still makes us unique in our own way. That being said, the shoe doesn’t always fit when it comes to moisturizers. Off the top of our head, we can think of at least 4-5 different types of skin textures. To fully understand moisturizers and how they work, you need to know what category you fall under.

There are a couple of ways for you to identify your skin type or category. The first is consulting your dermatologist and the second is looking at your T-zone. We know the T-zone part sounds confusing but it’ll all make sense in a minute.

T-zones are indicators of your skin type that most people don’t really know about. In most cases, moisturizing isn’t all about smearing lotions and essential oils. It’s about a lot more than that. The T-zone is so-called because is starts at the base of your chin and stretches all the way up your nose and mouth to the larger part of your fore head. It forms a sort of T if you pay close attention. The T-zone usually indicates what kind of skin you have. Analyze its appearance, or texture, after a day of work. If it’s oily then you have oily skin; if it’s dry then the same rule applies. Your face, according to your T-zone could be dry, oily, normal, sensitive, or a combination.

After observing this, and knowing what kind of skin you have, it’s time to apply that knowledge and pick out the right moisturizer.

Oily skin

If you are blessed with skin that needs to be wiped every few hours then you probably have oily skin. People blessed with this kind of skin are better off laying off the creams and using lotions instead – they are better suited for oily skin and they don’t make your skin even more oily. You should go for lotions that contain lactic acids like glycolic and salicylic acids.

Dry skin

Your skin is dry when your face simply doesn’t oil up or sweat as much as other people’s. Dry skinned people don’t have enough moisture in their skin so your typical lotion won’t do. You need creams that will lock all the moisture in during the day. A thick and rich moisturizing cream will sink into the skin and keep it nice and moisturized for the entire day.

Combination skin

Combination skin is very rare and a proper assessment and recommendation might be improbable, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have suggestions. A lotion should do just the trick. Creams might not agree with your delicate face; a lotion is better. When choosing a lotion try to pick one without acids like Neutrogena and Cetaphil.

Normal skin

This category of people can use whatever kind of moisturizer they please, however, a light ointment is recommended. There is no need to compensate for dryness or oiliness, so a lightweight ointment will provide all the comfort and moisture you might need.

Sensitive skin

People with sensitive skin have very limited options when it comes to beauty products and moisturizers. Since their skin turns red when exposed to something unfamiliar or different, they need to stick to products that won’t trigger some allergic reaction or something. People with this kind of skin should avoid products that have ingredients like alcohol, fragrances, and parabens. Sanseti Skin Care is paraben-free by the way! 😃

Usually, moisturizers are applied just after the toner in any beauty regimen. It hydrates the skin and it can make all the difference when you are trying to get a smoother, softer skin. It’s always best to properly cleanse your face before you start your beauty regimen. Soaps and face cleansers will do just fine – it’s always better to start on a clean slate.

Moisturizing shouldn’t be a daily affair; it should be done at least twice a day for better results. A single session is simply inadequate and won’t do.

Using a specific moisturizer isn’t just an all-year affair. You may need to adjust your regimen to suit the weather and environment you find yourself in. For example, in the summer, even though you have dry skin, you’ll be better off settling for some lotion and sunscreen. During the summer, our skin produces more oil and we’re better off going with something incredibly lightweight.

Choosing a moisturizer isn’t as easy as most people might think, it requires a lot research and testing. To some degree, we all have sensitive skin.

Regardless of whether your skin is categorized as normal, oily, etc. It’s always better to spend some time with new products before you decide to make it your new moisturizer. You need to check the ingredients and you need to apply it on a small part for your body like your forearm before making it your staple moisturizer for the next few months.
