Now that it’s summertime, people are slowly but surely leaving their houses to enjoy some fun in the sun! By going to the beach, pool or even a walk, your skin will be exposed to the sun’s UV radiation. It’s important to always apply sunscreen not only just before leaving the house, but including it in your everyday skincare.

Because sunscreen is considered a necessity in skincare, knowing why is important. There are some common myths and misconceptions surrounding sunscreens that people should be aware of before buying their next bottle. Here are a few so that next time you apply it, you’ll know how to use it correctly and understand its importance.

Myth 1. You don’t always need sunscreen.

Many people believe that sunscreen is only needed when your whole body will be exposed to the sun. We’re going to the beach, don’t forget the sunscreen! Well, that’s something you should be saying every time you leave the house, even on cloudy days. The truth is that anytime the body is exposed to light from the sun, it is exposed to UV rays, even if it is an overcast day. The face is the most common area exposed to the sun throughout the day which increases its risk for sun damage. When your face is the first thing people typically see and shows your age, it should be a priority to protect it.

Myth 2. People with dark skin don’t need sunscreen.

Because those with dark skin have more melanin, people think that means they don’t need to use sunscreen. While people with darker skin are more protected from the sun, they should still use a full spectrum sunscreen because UVA damage is not blocked by melanin in the same way and can lead to premature skin aging and wrinkles.

Myth 3. Makeup is enough coverage to protect your face.

While makeup does provide some protection from the sun, it is not enough to replace sunscreen altogether. Most makeup products do not have SPF included as an ingredient. Makeup should be considered an additional layer of protection against UV but it shouldn’t be the only protection.

Myth 4. All sunscreen is the same.

Like any other product, there are a variety of different sunscreens. There is a common misconception that all sunscreen is roughly the same and will do the same job. There are a variety of ingredients in sunscreens, however, and they may protect against different levels of sun exposure. Active ingredients such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and ecamsule are often used to filter out UVA and UVB rays. There are also chemical blockers, such as avobenzone. These ingredients all block the sun in different ways. The best thing you can get for your skin is a full spectrum sunscreen because it will protect the skin against the largest range of UV light.

Myth 5. All you need is one application of sunscreen a day.

Putting on sunscreen in the morning before you apply your makeup is a great way to protect your skin from the sun. But just like your makeup, the sunscreen should be reapplied. In reality, sunscreen breaks down in the light and loses its effectiveness over a short period of time. You should be applying sunscreen every 2-4 hours.

When in doubt, always apply sunscreen. Incorporating it into your daily skincare routine will help you ensure that your skin is always protected.
