Everyone has different skin types. Most people’s skin types fall under these main categories: sensitive, dry, oily and combination. How you care for your skin depends on what category you fall under. During certain seasons, your skin type may change due to the environmental factors and their effects on your skin.
Now that it’s summer, most of you might be experiencing oily skin. While being outside and enjoying the warm weather is good and fun, with increased temperature comes humidity. This causes an increase in oil production from your skin’s sebaceous glands. While sebum contains lipids and fats that protect your skin from drying environmental stressors, too much can make your skin’s surface extra oily.
Oily skin presents some unique challenges, like a shiny complexion and acne breakouts. With the right products and skincare routine, your skin will be good as new.
Here are a few methods to treat oily skin:
- Wash your skin morning and night.
The first thing you should do is wash your face right when you wake up and have it be the last thing you do before going to bed. Regardless of whether or not you have oily skin, this is something you should always do in your skincare routine. It is the most important step of any skincare routine. It’s especially important for those with oily skin to give their face a complete cleanse in the morning. During the night, your skin is busy shedding skin cells and producing oils. That’s why washing with a good exfoliating cleanser, both in the morning and evening, is recommended. Use a cleanser or wash with salicylic acid. This will really help clear away excess oil and dead skin to prevent buildup in the pores.
- After washing your face, use a toner.
Once your skin is clean and free from any makeup, dirt, and oil, Lee suggests you follow with an exfoliating toner that contains any of these ingredients: salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and/or lactic acid. Using a toner, post-cleanse, helps set the stage for the rest of your skincare routine. Toners can also calm your skin, visibly reduce pores, and keep your skin refreshed and hydrated.
- After toner comes the skin treatment.
As in any case, this step will depend on your specific skin concerns. If acne is a concern for your skin, the products you use will differ from those of someone who isn’t prone to acne. In the evening, use a retinol product to help keep pores clear and skin glowing.
- Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
You might be thinking, my skin is oily – moisture is the last thing that it needs! In reality, it’s actually the first thing your skin needs. Your skin begins producing oils when it believes it’s not moisturized enough. Which is why you have an excess of oil production. This is your skin telling you that it needs moisture and to combat the lack of it, it begins making its own.
Incorporating these steps in your current skincare routine will go a long way in reducing the oils in your skin.
